How to Care for Leather Shoes in Nigeria

Good leather shoes na investment. Treat them well, and e go dey look fresh for years. Ignore them, and one harmattan season fit dry them out until they crack like old Ibadan road.

We make shoes by hand here in Ibadan, from leather, start to finish. So believe us when we say this: leather dey drink, e dey breathe, and e dey get thirsty. Keep am clean, conditioned, polished, and protected, and e go reward you for a long time.

Here’s the full routine, step by step. No wahala, no fancy equipment. (Got suede or nubuck instead? Our guide to cleaning suede shoes is the one you need, because those materials follow different rules.)

What You Need Before You Start

You fit find most of these at any shoe shop, market, or repair shop. Just make sure everything is made for smooth leather.

  • Old newspaper or cloth to cover your work area
  • Gloves
  • Soft cotton cloth or chamois (an old T-shirt works fine)
  • Soft-bristle brush
  • Smooth leather cleaner or saddle soap
  • Leather conditioner
  • Shoe polish (cream is easiest)
  • Leather protector spray or beeswax

Wey you no wan DIY? Any good shoe repairer go clean, polish, and condition your pair for small money. No shame in that.

Step 1: Get the Dust Off

Take out the laces first. Then brush off loose dust, especially around the stitching, the creases, and where the upper meets the sole. Harmattan haze, red dust, Lagos road grit: all of it acts like sandpaper if you rub it into the leather.

Next, spread your newspaper, put on gloves, and open a window. Some shoe products are harsh, so don’t work in a closed room. Apply a little cleaner or saddle soap with a cloth, work it gently over the shoe, and wipe off the dirt. Easy does it. You are cleaning leather, not scrubbing pot.

Step 2: Let Them Dry the Right Way

Here is where many people spoil good shoes. Never put wet leather in direct sun or near a heater. Fast drying makes leather stiff and cracked. Find a shaded, airy spot and let your shoes dry naturally.

Caught in rain or splashed by a danfo on a flooded road? Stuff the shoes with plain paper or tissue to hold the shape and soak up water. Change the paper when it gets damp. Newspaper ink can rub off on light leather, so use plain paper for tan and white pairs.

Step 3: Condition (Don’t Skip This One)

Conditioning keeps leather soft and stops it drying out and cracking. Pick a conditioner made for smooth leather. Natural ones soak into the leather, while heavy synthetic ones just sit on top.

Rub a small amount over the whole shoe in a thin layer. Wait a few minutes, then wipe off the excess. The leather takes only what it needs. During harmattan, the dry air pulls moisture out fast, so condition more often. And yes, you can condition a brand new pair before you ever wear it. That is how you start strong.

Step 4: Polish for That Shine

Polish comes as liquid, paste, or cream. Liquid dries fast but has few colours and doesn’t last. Paste lasts longer but is messy and slow. Cream is the sweet spot: easy to apply, plenty of colours, and it wears well.

Pick a colour that matches your shoe, then test it on a small hidden spot first. Rub it on with a soft cloth, let it dry fully, then buff with a clean cloth or brush until it shines. A word of warning: polish cannot change the colour of your shoes. If you want a new colour, see a repair shop about a proper dye job. And if your shoes already have layers of old polish, use a pre-cleaner first.

Step 5: Protect Against Rain and Dirt

A good protector keeps water and grime from breaking down the leather. You have two main options.

  • Protector spray: nearly invisible and breathable, it handles mild to moderate wet and dirt without changing the finish. Best for your Sunday best and work shoes.
  • Beeswax: a thicker shield that sits on the surface. Great against heavy wet, but it can change how the shoe looks, so save it for pairs that do the hard work.

A Quick Word on Polish Safety

Some polishes contain chemicals you shouldn’t breathe in or let sit on your skin. Wear gloves, work in a well-ventilated space, and keep polish away from children and pets. Put used rags in a sealed bag and dispose of them carefully.

Small Habits, Big Difference

  • Give each pair a day to rest between wears, so the leather can dry out from sweat.
  • Keep shoe trees or paper inside to hold the shape when you’re not wearing them.
  • Store them away from heat, damp corners, and direct sunlight.
